Anyway - despite the dull and crappy photos I'm going to show you the first quilt of the year. Halfway into January, I should have got it finished earlier to be honest but I am halfway through (well, a bit more than halfway) a reversible 'quilt as you go' lap quilt and I've had a few swaps on with my flickr groups so I've been busy busy busy and not as productive as I should have been.
This one is a present for someone. She has a son (well, she has 2 sons, one is smaller than the other though and the big one may not be overly impressed with quilts). I hope they like it!
I used up some of my favourite scraps for the blocks, and then quilted the bottom half with buttons. The buttons are very cool, they have polka dots or gingham on them. Cute.
And I pieced the back with more scraps and some soft flannel that has been in my stash for a while, waiting to be used up. I love flannel, it reminds me of being small and having flannelette sheets on the bed in winter. My brother used to carry round a scrap of flannelette sheet with him everywhere he went, he called it his 'ah'. We nearly lost it once, he had it hanging out the window of the car as we were going off somewhere, down the motorway (except it's not a motorway, they don't have them in Suffolk, it's just a dual carriageway). My dad had to stop the car and go back to retrieve it. Can you imagine dying for a bit of flannelette sheet? Good job the road wasn't too busy....
Everyone now has their partners for the fat quarter swap and I'll recap the details for you. You need to observe your partner's preferences, please, and mail out 2 fat quarters (18 x 22 inches) of good quality cotton fabric (unless your partner has specified something else, like silk or baby cord) plus 1 piece of an extra something. A bit of haberdashery, some buttons, just a small token. Nothing needs to be made, nothing needs to be bought. Use up what you have in your stash already. But please do try and send something your partner will like. I have done my best to pair people up according to taste, and it's not a blind swap, you are sending to each other, so if you need to contact your partner do so (you can get the contact details from me if you need them). Last day for mailing is February 14th, but as this is so simple try and get it done asap, that way it's done and dusted and you are less likely to forget.
Should anyone have any problems, just let me know. I can help out, I'm sure.

I have a challenge for you for next week - make something that isn't awesome! I'm getting a little jealous over here.

I like your quilts, they look actually possible to create! I don't sew to much, especially by hand...I have tremors and don't like turning myself into a human pin cushion!
I crochet, much more forgiving on twitches. Lovely to do in front of the wood stove at night after a long day at work and kids.
Have you ever heard of the Pennsylvania Dutch Amish over here in the states. They are about an hour away from me, but you can find them at any of the local farmers markets. They make insane quilts.

I couldn't imagine.
Sun? What sun? I don't think anyone has seen that celestial being for months now. Ack! Cabin fever setting in fast. Going to be a balmy 5 degrees F' here tonight. I think I shall go for a walk in the park!
i get so sick of the dull no sun days. i adore the use of buttons on this one...such a unique idea and totally cute!
That quilt is delicious Katy - who wouldn't be thrilled to receive it? The buttons are a wonderful touch.
I am having such fun going through my stash finding just the *right* thing for my swap partner for your swap.
As for the weather - I saw a teeny bit of blue sky this morning, honest I did. It went though :-(

Love the quilt - especially the buttons. What a lovely idea. I'm impressed by the tattoo by the way!
love the quilt its beautiful.. I'm sure it will be loved... I never had a "Blankie" but I did have a toy squirrel that I loved and lost on a walk in the woods behind the house when I was small, my dad eventually found him for me by the side of the pond all wet and muddy. how I loved that ratty squirrel.
I saw this post by chance earlier today and felt totally inadequate. A beaut quilt and you've already finished it. January has only just started!! Anyhow, have just got back from the Post Office. Parcel on the way to you lady. Now how smug am I feeling... :OD
Very cute quilt! It looks very cozy. Love the buttons!! Hey, here's a deal. I have some sun to swap today. Only thing is it comes with -7 F/-22 C...is that a problem???? I'm going to stuff it into a swap box...
sunshine would be a very nice thing right now! I've never known brum be so grey so much of the time :(
that quilt is lovely, I like the fact its covered in buttons
xx
this quilt is adorable! I love the buttons on it
First if anyone wants some sun, come to California, it's been in the low to mid 60's! We are starting to wonder if we will be having a winter here. Second, beauty of a quilt, and I also love the new tattoo! Third, my little package is on it's way to my partner! I can't wait to hear if she likes it.
Rebecca :)
Ok, first.. coming from an Alaskan.. we have NO light in the winter (well limited light anyway).. but at least we are gaining daylight right now... and to top it off, we are experiencing a Chinook.. so it is crazy nasty weather right now, every street is an ice skating rink.. LOL! It is cloudy & gray here today. When you do get a good day of sunlight, one takes advantage of it... Like calling in sick ;)
Second! Love your quilts! :)
Gosh that is soooo cute!!
Lovely quilt Katy! It sounds like you've been a busy bee!

I know just what you mean about the lack of sun! My little boy keeps asking me why it's dark as we travel about during mid morning!
I LOVE that quilt - the colours are great, and I think it's the buttons that really made be fall in love with it!
The quilt is lovely! It makes me want to finish one I started for myself over a year ago. Then I could curl up and read a book.
cute quilt! Winter here last year was the wettest most never ending season ever so I know how you feel. A day of sunshine makes such a difference!!
WE LOVE IT, KATY!!! HUGE THANKS AND HUGS!! :)

Your quilt is like the sunshine, beautifull and warm! who needs more?
I know what you mean, one can get depressed of rainy grey days.
I saw the sun today, it was the kind of nice to look at sun, just don't go out in it (very, very cold), besides there is no need to go out when I can just stare at the photos of your fabric stash and go arghhhh... so much nice fabric! My list of wants grows longer!
I like the quilt too. The squares and buttons look so good on the white!
I love the buttons! What a great idea.
Sending you some Australian sunshine!
Now, off to organise my swap... everytime I go to do it I get sidetracked by finding things I want to make :-)
I was totally sick of the lack of sun too - then yesterday was freakishly bright and none-wintry around here. I think it's just teasing me though - looks like it'll be back to grey today *SIGH*
I am totally loving that quilt. LOL @ your Dad dodging cars to retreive the "Ah". That's why there are two of each comforter in this house ;)

Gorgeous quilt of course! And yes we need a good dose of sun, it's just starting to peek through the clouds down here in these parts - must get out and bask in it! :)
