an impossible task?

Becky over in the swoon along group was wondering - is it even possible to make an ugly swoon block?
Not one that is poorly constructed, but one that is really ugly in the choice of fabrics used.

You might think it'd be easy, but there are blocks made with every kind of fabric in the group pool and each and every one looks fantastic. I'm not just saying that, go look for yourself. Ok. There is one that's kind of ugly - Alice had some help from her son (who chose the fabrics) and the result wasn't the greatest combo ever seen. But even so, the more I look at it the more it's growing on me, it's kind of 1980s, garish fashion, a little bit clashing, a little bit wrong and that kind of makes it good. I actually kinda want it as a pillow. See what I mean? It's tricky.

Swoon along with me!

So let's have a challenge. Who can make a truly ugly block?

Head over to find out more details here. There's prizes. Oh yes there is.

hahahaa! What a fab idea! I agree with you, I love all the blocks in the group, even those ones made with fabric that would normally bring me out in a rash. It's the magic of the pattern, I think.

That sounds like fun ... Alice's swoon is not really ugly just unusual, and actually withe the story behind it it turns rather beautiful ... or maybe it's just my love for the not-so-loved things

Hmmm, not sure about ugly but it is slightly jarring on the eyes.... ever so slightly. Although makes me think of Ribena!!!? Love the idea of a competition to find the ugliest, although I'd kind of feel sorry for the block that wins - how weird is that, fabric with feelings. I spend too much time of Pinterest!!!!

OOH! I have an ugly one that didn't make it into my final quilt. Off to take a photo now.

I'm guessing a photo-real fruit and veg combo with some brown batik would look awesome, dammit I don't have any!

Yes let's challenge Hadley to make a while quilt!! Practically bionic, she could run it up overnight with her little elves ...

Actually ... in all seriousness I think I have the perfect charm pack for this ... a real granny's knickers floral mess ... and the colours ....eeek!!

Fun! I made a block just for this contest. You can see it at: http://plainjane21.blogspot.com/2012/02/usb.html

It's not exactly ugly - I think it's because it reminds me of a pair of 80's mens underpants. Not that I have a lot of experience of mens underpants from the 80's, so I'm not sure why it reminds me of them. Ok, I'm going now.

I've stalled on my second block, because although it now has contrast (unlike my first) it defintely isn't pretty! I'm going to finish it up because I think it stands a good chance of winning this contest!

I think the blocks are all lovely. The USB is not really ugly if you get rid of the awful color that it is laying on in the pic it looks as great as the others. :)
