what I want for my birthday

Tomorrow is my birthday. I am wishing on a star that this would actually happen, but I figure if I get enough people interested I stand a better chance of it actually happening.
I can be quite persistent you know.

Extra wide backings. I get my knickers in a twist over these on a regular basis. I have most of my quilts long armed, and pieced backings aren't as easy for the quilter as a nice smooth single piece of fabric. All those additional seams, they can lay funny, quilt up a bit awkwardly, add bulk to a quilt that doesn't need to be there.
I quite often buy flat bed sheets from Ikea because they're all cotton, the quality is pretty good and they're cheap. But they're also a bit on the dull side. What I want is a fun print, not the regular extra wides which are usually way too traditional or the wrong colours for my quilts. Don't get me wrong, Moda have started producing a few more modern prints (some dots) but there could be more and there could be a whole heap of really awesome stuff.
Imagine this - your favourite designer's fabrics, with one extra wide fabric in each collection, not one of the focal prints, but one of the co-ordinates, a dot, a stripe, a little floral, or whatever. Or even every other collection, or every 3rd. Most designers have a 'theme', they don't stray too far from the path they feel safe on, so you could easily mix and match one of the older prints with the newer ones, right? Especially with backings.
Let's take my friend Aneela as an example. The co-ordinates from Pips such as the square dot (sorry Aneela - I am useless with names and have completely forgotten what it's called) would look fantastic with Little Apples or Walk in the Woods and also her next line Cherry Christmas.

Hands up who would want to back any quilt with any one of these?

Pezzy love

Pez in extra wide - yes please.

So who else wants this to happen? I might have to start a little campaign - email my favourite designers and mention to them that if they submitted a co-ordinate for extra wides when they submit designs for their regular collections it would be kinda cool. Then Moda could print them and we could buy them and we would all live happily ever after. Yes?

And it would be the best birthday present ever.

That is a brilliant idea Katy, I would sign your petition or whatever. Happy Birthday for tomorrow.

Megan said...

Yes! Yes! Yes! By the time I'm done with a quilt top the last thing I'm interested in is piecing a backing. I will gladly sign the petition.

A very happy Birthday to you Miss K!

Happy Birthday for tomorrow. This sounds like a good idea, im not sure I am at the stage of needing extra wide backing but I understand the idea fully.
Good luck to you on your quest

Oh and a happy ginger filled monkeyish birthday to you my illustrated friend.

Wonderful idea. I can never understand - after piecing something tricky - how sewing two pieces of fabric together in a straight line always defeats me!
And Happy Birthday!!

Dolores said...

Genius! Maybe Moda should hire you to be Marketing Manager. Happy Birthday for tomorrow. dxx

Well said, totally agreed! Happy Birthday for tomorrow, may your wishes come true! :)

I'm loving your thinking on this one!

Kate said...

Yes, yes, yes, piecing backings is my least favourite thing. Oh and Happy Birthday!

This has been a little bug bear of mine too. Moda does do some wide backs (I've got one from the original Rouenneries range, and Ive seen there's also some from 3Sisters ranges. But it would be great if all (or most) of their ranges came with one or two wide backs of a coupe of prints. It couldn't be that difficult, surely?

Shevvy said...

Happy birthday. Yep with you on the campaign, the only extra wides I have found are so frumpy.

Nicole Follow the White Bunny said...

I hear you! For my last quilt (ahem...a little while ago that was) I cut up a duvet cover (also Ikea) to make a one piece backing. We need more fun prints (like the ones you have shown) on the market!!! And an early 'Happy Birthday' from me, in case I forget to say it tomorrow...

Cass said...

Grea idea, I hate the idea of piecing backs after I've finished a quilt, hence I have one sitting here waiting for the backing to be done because it needs tone pieced. Extra wide Pez yes please. Happy birthday for tomorrow too

Just brilliant, hand up and waving. Have a wonderful day tomorrow too, Happy Birthday!

Great idea! Hope you can make it happen! and Happy Birthday!!!!!!!

That is such a good idea. I'm nearly finishing my first quilt and thinking about the backing bit nearly melted my poor brain!! Have a great birthday!

Elena said...

YES! Where's the petition? I hate piecing backs!

Downtown Housewife said...

you are funny and i agree completely! personally, i like a solid back, not pieced.

Linda said...

A great idea but at the right price! I hate having to spend lots of money on backing fabrics which is why I piece a lot of mine and as I hand quilt all my work I don't encounter the long arm problems.

Swedish Scrapper said...

Great idea! I'll sign if you make a petition.
Happy Birthday tomorrow!

Katy Cameron said...

Heh, good luck with your campaign!

Happy birthday for tomorrow too :o)

Kate said...

Yes, but... I don't want a small print. Backings are THE spot to show off a big design that you don't want to chop into pieces in the quilt itself. I'm thinking like AMH and Kate Spain, who tend toward some big (beautiful) prints. I hate piecing backs, so give me something gorgeous I can show off on the other side! (Oh, and happy birthday!)

Love the Pezzy prints! What a great idea. Come on, MODA. Do it for Katy! Happy birthday!

Happy Birthday! Great idea, do we get one wish for each candle on our cake? Or do we get a more powerful wish? I'm trying to plan out the backing for one of my quilts, not as easy as it looks sometimes! Especially when you don't want the birdcages going sideways! My mom says it doesn't matter if they are sideways, it's on the back????? What????? I don't think so! Sign me up for that backing petition!

Jeni said...

Happy Birthday Katy!

I think that would be fabulous! I know I'd buy them! Actually, I did bookmark some cute new ones on FQS that are coming out this summer! :)

YES! i've thought for a while that it's ridiculous how few extra-wide backings there are. do i want to go with muslin or a civil war reproduction fabric? not particularly my style!

Mary Anne said...

I think this is an awesome idea! It's not uncommon for a new collection to come out with a laminate or a voile in one (or more) of the prints...why not an extra-wide as well? Good luck on your campaign - count me in for the cause! Have an awesome Birthday tomorrow!

Hitch and Thread said...

Have an awesome birthday. Mine is on the 9th too! Hmmmm maybe I should start a petition for what I'd like for my birthday and leave it where my husband can see it...

Have a great and amazing birthday!!

Katie said...

Brilliant birthday wish! I think we should all contact Moda on our birthdays and ask for that. They'd get several calls a day and would eventually have to give in!
Oh and happy birthday :-)

What a great idea! I wouldn't totally give up pieced back, but options are always a good thing.

Happy Birthday! What you are really asking for isn't just a gift for yourself but a gift for the world (of modern quilting!). ;) I do hope that Moda is reading!

You draw up the petition,, or have Lynne do it with her legaleze language so no one understands it, and I will sign it.

And here's an order straight from the heart...Have a happy Birthday!

traceyjay said...

I agree -- some cute ones would be awesome... I almost bought these the other day: http://www.fabric.com/quilting-fabric-just-arrived-quilting-fabric-moda-108-dottie-quilt-backings.aspx

But I too hate piecing backings when I'm done... and so many quilt tops just sit.

Deb said...

Great idea, go for it girl! Happy Birthday.

Melissa said...

I'll go so far as to even ask for two or three choices in backing in a series of lines. Pieced backs are very pretty but sometimes I just want to be finished!

Happy Birthday!

i will gladly send email after email!

Pieced backs are a pain in the patootey! Extra wide width in modern prints would be very welcome!

Barb said...

I've never used extra wide backing, usually because what I've found offered doesn't match my quilt! It'd be awesome if there was more selection!!!!

Happy birthday! May all your wishes come true!

Sew Festive said...

My birthday is tomorrow too!!! So that's England and the US that has birthday representatives who can wish as hard as possible :)

Ramona said...

A wide backing in the Pez would be so fun! You are right about fun fabrics for backings. And really, if a fabric shop had a hard time selling out of these wide backings, they could cut into fat quarters and other pre-cuts.
Good idea...and Happy Birthday!

Karin said...

Oh. My. Gawd. I would be over the moon if Pez came in wide backing. I agree that pieced backings are a PAIN.

Jacey said...

My hand is up! And happy birthday!! It's my sister's birthday, too!

~Michelle~ said...

Preach it, sista! Are there are other manufacturers who make the 108" backings besides Moda? That would be nice... Then the next step in the process is to get retailers to stock & sell!

Couldn't agree more. Would love to see some more funky extra wide backing fabrics!

Hippo Birdie Two Ewes....tomorrow!:)

I agree with you AND Kate from above....I think a bigger print would be fabulous on the back.

In our shop we have those that you speak of and some lovely Stonehenge AND batik extra wides....but yes, why don't they go ahead and design something strictly for an EW....people will gladly by an 1/8 or 1/4 yd too if it's something they want for the front.

Montseta said...

It seems that you were reading my mind! Just one or two prints of each collection in extra wide for backings (perhaps a large scale plus a small scale print, or in two different colours). I think the only designers that do this is 3 sisters (they always have a lovely extra wide fabric in a few colours in each line) but they are quite traditional and sometimes I need something more fum or modern...
Some people like piecing backs, but I don't like it at all. I prefer to use a print I like for the backing and when I get fed up with the quilt turn it for a few days and enjoy the backing.
So yes! Let's start a campaign for more fun/modern extra wide fabrics for backing quilts!!!

Marit said...

Yes, yes, yes! We would love some fresh extra wide fabric.
Happy birthday tomorrow. May ALL your wishes come through!
; )

Naomi said...

lol! I don't think it's too much to ask. I would LOVE this and I would buy it too.

Sew Quine said...

Most definitely YES! I can't understand why the fabric companies haven't cottoned onto what a good seller this would be. Happy Birthday for tomorrow, have a great day.

Marion said...

Happy birthday! And yes, I also want more zingy and fun extra wide backing fabrics, and not just from Moda (although that would be a great start). It would be wonderful to be able to match my usually quite colorful quilt tops with equally colorful backs.

circle retreat quilter said...

oh yes please just what the quilt world needs, like you say just one in each range that flow over a dew..Happy B'day for tomorrow. how your wish comes true.

Hand up, waving frantically :) some modern extra wides would be very nice.

I hope you have a lovely birthday tomorrow! And I hope you get your wish :o)

I totally agree! Genius idea, hopefully some of our favorite designers will grant your birthday wish! :) Happy early birthday!!

maru g said...

Completely on the same page, and i don't think because our birthdays are 3 days apart! Extra wide, yes, please! I just finished a very long search, and i only came up with Rashida Coleman's Squigglys. My first quilt was ruined, in my opinion, by a subpar blender. Fabric companies, hear our collective plea! Extra wide backings of designer fabrics! Thanks Katy for the idea!

Jacqui said...

Oh yeah, I'd sign that petition! And happy birthday in advance - although it's already tomorrow here in New Zealand so I'm actually right on time :)

Trudi said...

Seems to me you're already the right side of the fence to start bending some ears! I'm sure you can make it a very happy birthday for all of us! We'll be right by your side along the way! Happy Birthday for tomorrow!

Happy ??? Birthday!!

Just yesterday, I went fabric shoppng for an extra wide backing fabrics and only found muslin and too heavy decorator fabrics. So, YES, I would love to find extra wide fabrics in these beautiful designs. The navy blue & white would look great with the whole cloth paisley fabric that I'm planning to make a quilt for my master bedroom.
